The Post Office

Dave Jones, left, has worked in the post office for 15 years, joining the service straight from school. He was brought up on the Home Farm on the Shavington estate and his father still has a herd of dairy cattle. Dave enjoys his rural round. It includes Mickley, Tern Hill and Goldstone. He knows the people on his round and because of the remoteness of some, he collects post from their houses as well as delivering it.

Andy Hughes, on the right in the photograph, has worked in the post service for 22 years. He was transferred from Welshpool to Market Drayton.

Mark Humpage is the Delivery Office Manager a post he has held for 14 years. He too joined the service from school but unlike Dave Jones no longer has the opportunity to get to know his customers. There is now much more pressure on his job to meet targets and provide value for money.

He has seen many changes in his time with the Post Office. Today the service has much more competition. Local businesses use courier services and other companies provide parcel delivery services. He believes the customer base will continue to grow. There are now 9,106 residencies and 308 businesses in the TF9 post code area. The post office makes 19 rural deliveries and 12 town deliveries a day and employs 45 people. There has been a change in the nature of post of late too. The number of A4 sized flat letters has increased as more companies send out mail shots, the number of houses increases and with the influx of professional people, executives and so on, people who receive a different sort of post to that traditionally received in the town.
