Henry
Palethorpe, founder of the company, was born in 1829
in the Black Country.
He set up business in Birmingham in the 1850s but realised
that the United States was flooding the home market
with cheap bacon and pork. He specialised in
sausages and
met enormous success. A production plant
was set up at Tipton
which by 1896 claimed to be the largest sausage producer
in the world. The company continued to expand, helped
by the war effort during 1914 and 1918. During
the 1960s large
national grocery retailers were established, putting
even greater pressure on the company that
had lost some of its
markets during the 1939 to 1945 war. In 1967 a new
purpose built factory was opened in Market
Drayton at a cost
of £650,000
and employing 400 people.

Palethorpe’s became
a part of Northern Foods, the UK’s largest manufacturer
of meat and savoury products, in 1990. The plant at Market
Drayton now employs 900 people. The company supplies foods
to the leading retailers to be sold under brand names.
Palethorpe’s customers include Asda. Up to March
31st, 2002, the company’s 150th anniversary, sales
were up by 5.9% on the previous year.
