Other Crops

Like in most agricultural areas, other crops were grown by farmers to help them stay in business or to meet a specific demand. Mangolds were grown for winter fodder for the cattle. One farm in North Shropshire produced 50 tons per acre in the 1920s.

Thomas Sandford occupied an oil mill at Sandford in Prees. On his death in 1726 he had over 400 gallons of linseed oil worth over £50. Many other farmers were listed as growing flax and hemp.

In 1868 there was a shortage in feed crops. Children were employed to collect acorns, of which there was an abundance. They were also employed to strip bark to supply the tanneries.

Kingcup Mushrooms Ltd was in Hinstock.
