Harry
(or Henry) Vaughan
Harry is 79 years old and aims to retire from his market stall at the
end of the summer in 2002. He claims that standing in the market during
the winter is now getting a bit too much for him! But on a more serious
note he recognises that the business, based at his own farm, Goldstone
Nurseries, is no longer paying. He has been working the market since
1945 and has seen many changes in the town, not least of which was
the arrival of the supermarkets. He blames these for the demise of
businesses like his own.

Harry’s
family arrived at Hinstock in 1875. They scraped a living
by standing under the Buttercross selling eggs, cheese
and butter. For years now Harry has run the stall with
the help of his ‘adopted’ niece, Elizabeth
Vaughan. Despite having the same name they are not related.
Elizabeth’s family live next door to Harry and helped
the business survive through hard times.
