Before opening his electrical
business, Chris Fennell, left in the photograph with
his repair engineer Duncan Meredith, worked in a fish
and chip shop in Queen Street. He originally sold second
hand goods and repaired appliances, but as the cost
of new appliances has fallen the second hand market
collapsed. His business now only sells new goods.
The new housing developments
have been the reason for the success of his business.
He sells a large number of cookers, especially ranges,
and breadmakers, reflecting the arrival of new tastes
in the town.
Duncan Meredith is now
a full time repair engineer. Once a self employed farm
worker, he moved to working with Chris Fennell after
qualifying as an electrician. Work now is a very different
experience to farming. The hours are regular. He remembers
times during lambing when he could not leave work or
the animals until late into the night, an experience
he does not want to have again. His pay is also much
higher than with farm work.
