Adderley in the 17th and
18th centuries was very prosperous dairy farming community.
A record of 93 inventories between 1660 and 1750 show
60 herds of an average size of 23 cows. One farmer, Richard
Furber who died in 1660, had 137 cattle.
The photograph is a potent
reminder of the cyclical nature of farming. The average
herd size in the county today is 75 cows, mostly Friesian
although some farmers are experimenting with other breeds
and attempting cross-breeding to improve yield. The average
yield per cow is 1,160 gallons of milk.
