Shropshire
farmers often employed migrant workers, especially from
Wales and Ireland.
Many women went in search of work at harvest time and
were paid 8d a day for weeding and haymaking in 1827.
In 1869 a Government enquiry identified the county’s
agricultural worker’s housing as being worse than
any other part of the country other than Dorset. During
this period the population of the county grew by 45%;
that of Market Drayton grew by 53% - one of the largest
increases in the county.
