Tina's family moved onto Bar Hill House
Farm at Madeley , when she was 4 years old. Most of the land is
rented out to Dairy farmers . Her father discouraged her from going
into farming but she and Charles grew their own food before she
moved back onto the farm and they took over 8 acres. They now farm
60 or more acres and sell their meat directly to the public.
The farm has 200 breeding ewes, 30/40 heifers that are kept outside
for 20 months, 3 breeding sows and a boar producing litters of Tamworth
pigs and a handful of hens for their eggs. The farm is not organic
but the animals are reared in traditional ways, without the use
of fertilisers and brought inside only when necessary. Tina
and Charles were selling their lambs at the livestock market up
to the time of animal movement restrictions due to the foot and
mouth epidemic. The livestock market was replaced by Collection
Centres and the fact that they were not able to bring unsold lambs
back to the farm left them vulnerable to exploitation by unscrupulous
buyers. They were already producing freezer packs for family and
friends so Charles sought advice from the environmental health
officers and purchased a refrigerated compartment that had previously
been built onto a lorry.
