Home Farm at Peplow is a mixed farming enterprise. It has been run within the family for 100 years. It has beef, sheep, cereals and a pedigree Aberdeen Angus herd established for breeding purposes.

Mike was born on a farm at Cold Hatton. He left school to work at Barclays Bank in Ludlow. In 1976 he left the bank and returned to the land as a seven-day a week cowman. He earned three times as much as in the bank, lived in a rent-free tied cottage and the milk came free. When Mike joined the farm at Peplow in 1982 it stretched to150 acres. Today he manages just under 1000 acres within the local area. He describes himself as an environmental friendly businessman, converting the farm to organic with the aim of providing farm produce including meat and vegetables to the local market and beyond. He makes extensive use of technology, commissions research, laboratory services and various advisers every month to ensure the development is on track. He monitors the herds and soil as part of his risk management strategy.

Helen was born on Home Farm. She worked as Personal Assistant to the Managing Director at Palethorpes until she started the family. She now maintains the farm records and completes the substantial amount of office work associated with the move to organic
They sell beef and lamb direct from the farm to customers who call in. They do not advertise.
Mike sees himself as custodian of the local environment. The River Tern flows along the eastern boundary of the farm for three miles. Water is drawn from the river to fill the reservoirs in winter. Mike has already observed the benefit of going organic on the environment including the fish, the bird life and the local flora and fauna.
Mike and Helen continue to be involved in life in the village. This tends to centre on church. Mike was also a Parent Governor at the Grove School at one time.

Mike would like to draw from the network interest in identifying the changes to the flora and fauna following the move from intensive arable farming to organic. He looks to developing new opportunities for local sales.
Mike offers to members of the network his passionate enthusiasm for organic methods. He is willing to share this experience. He welcomes prior arranged visits but opportunities may be limited because of health and safety regulations. His ideal would be to walk people around the farm on a summer evening showing how it works and telling of the benefits to the environment and why the quality and texture as well as the taste of organic food is worth the little extra on price.
