Mike
is a farmer's son from the Market Drayton area. Following university,
he worked in Ross-on-Wye for 3 years then he moved back to Market
Drayton and married a local girl. His two brothers and one of his
sisters still farm and although Mike was always interested
in the agricultural industry, he looked at other opportunities
in which to be involved. He eventually became a Charter Surveyor
specialising in rural property and livestock. He is a Partner with
Barbers and has been involved in the livestock market for 20 years.
The Market Drayton Livestock
Market moved to its present out-of-town site in 1992 following
a joint venture with the District Council. This facility serves
a wide area including Shropshire, Cheshire, North Staffordshire
and Derbyshire. It is one of the largest one-day markets in the
country and multitudes of buyers attend it from all over. Because
it is a modern facility, it meets all the requirementsof Biosecurity
and health and safety standards. A typical throughput for the
Livestock Market each week is 250 fat cattle, 100 store cattle,
1,000 lambs and 300 calves.
