Randle moved to Market Drayton to build
and run a fish farm for the Grosvenor Estate. He later bought the
farm. Tern Fisheries produces between 70,000 -100,000 quality trout
each year, predominantly Rainbows for re-stocking lakes and reservoirs.
Customers are mainly angling clubs and most of the deliveries are within
a 50 mile radius. One man is employed full time and a part timer is
taken on during the summer when the farm is at is busiest, helping with
the feeding and the grading of the fish. The company also provides a
service of moving live fish inter- farm anywhere in the country. On
long journeys they are moved overnight so that loading and unloading
can take place during the hours of daylight especially if salmon smolts
are involved and a helicopter involved

Randle describes himself as an aquaculturalist,
living and working on the river Tern. He uses a natural resource
(the river) to produce food. There were a number of local mills
(10) on the river and on the streams feeding into it. They employed
a lot of people directly and indirectly threshing corn, making paper
and tanning hides. Otters, water voles, kingfishers and snakes have
all been sighted Because the valley is not intensively farmed there
are lots of unusual species of grasses and wild flowers.
Angling is the biggest participation sport in the country. Randle leases
a fishery from British Waterways at Gailey in Staffordshire. Here youngsters
are actively encouraged to learn the art of fly fishing and have access
to a professional instructor.

Randle seeks to draw from the network an awareness of the importance of the
Tern Valley and the local environment. He has not the time or resources to sell
small numbers of trout direct to people calling at the farm but does deliver
to local pubs and restaurants who prepare fresh food on their premises. He stopped
smoking trout some years ago when EEC regulations made it difficult. He would
like to develop this. He still has the equipment and would be interested to
hear from another local food producer interested in smoking.

Randle offer to the network, is the organised visits
to the farm on summer evenings.
