Judith is Professor of Gerontology at Keele University. She moved into Market Drayton in 2000. She describes it as a manageable town. Judith and Peter her partner, live on the edge of town but walk into the centre and to St.Mary's.

One of her research interests is the loss of confidence in their everyday life skills, that is experienced by some older people. The use of new appliances and technology can be daunting for someone who is easily confused. The failure to cook can lead to poor diet and trigger ill health.

She is also interested in a number of related topics including inter-generational issues such as the use of older people as mentors to young offenders. She is interested in the level of support from the network of family, neighbours and friends and the point at which they turn to the agencies for help. She has considered the quality of life experienced in Care Homes and Nursing Homes. Together with a colleague she researched the experience of employees who look after older people and how the work place supports them.

Judith believes that it has huge potential as a visitor attraction providing ready access to attractive countryside and good road links to the urban areas. She would like to see more guided walks in the locality and local farmers taking the opportunity to provide light refreshments to passing walkers.

Judith has a passion for teashops. She and a friend have prepared an, as-yet-unpublished, guide to teashops in the UK and the Channel Islands. Over the years they have revisited many and built up their own perception of what creates a successful teashop experience.
