Di and Andrew moved onto Cliffe Grange
Farm when they married. They have farmed it themselves since 1993.
It is a mixed farm.
Andrew's father was a farmer/dealer in cattle. The business came
to an abrupt halt with the foot and mouth epidemic. The problems
in raising beef cattle were compounded by the bureaucracy and they
gave up producing beef altogether and now produce dairy cows, fat
lambs and grain, sugar beet, and forage maize. They keep the business
as straight forward as possible and now do much less paper-chasing.
Working the farm is still hard work but altogether less stressful.
The milk is sold to the Muller factory that can be seen across the
fields. They sell all their lambs through the local livestock market
and supply local grain merchants Grove Feeds. There is another farm
at Stoke on Tern producing grass and animal crops, sheep and grain.
In total they farm about 800 acres and keep 160 cows and 450 breeding
ewes. They employ a herdsman and a general farm worker. Their children
show no interest in taking on the farm. |
