Sheila
commuted from Market Drayton to Keele University Registry where
she worked. Since she left the University she has earned her income
from photography. Sheila works in and around Market Drayton. She
responded to requests from a London photo agency to provide pictures
of every day activities for the Library. This involved negotiating
access with local companies and organisations and then taking shots
of subjects such as dinner ladies serving dinners, interior shots
of busy supermarkets and small food businesses. The photos were
submitted to the agency and a fee paid when it was sold to a newspaper
or magazine. They were also bought by publishers as illustrations
in text books.
Sheila has developed a post card
business based on scenic photos taken locally. She has also been
commissioned to produce particular scenic photos for tourism leaflets
and brochures. Commissions from local businesses are less prescriptive
and involve reaching agreement about the images they want to represent
them. Although a number of Bed & Breakfast establishments have
their own web sites it is Sheila's experience that they like to
send out cards with her pictures to customers. Sheila now specialises
in canal photography. This is a niche market and her pictures are
used in promotions by canal businesses, tourist offices and boat
hire companies.
