Brian was first attracted
to farming when he returned from a stint in the armed forces. His
father had been a brewer in North Cheshire and after trying his
hand at this profession but disliking it, Brian learnt the farming
trade in North Shropshire. This period was during the 1950's, when
people were being motivated by the government and by necessity to
produce food. The farm which Brian purchased was at the time very
primitive with no gas, electricity or water but a telephone; Even
today there is still no water but a well and a bore hole. To begin
with, he managed a dairy farm but was forced to change tactics when
the price of milk became unsustainable. Then followed a period of
farming pigs and producing pork, which was sold on contract, hoping
to make the most of the phrase 'muck or money'. However, once the
support price was dropped and pork was sold on a free market this
choice of farming became unpredictable. For the last twenty years,
Brian has been focusing his efforts on managing lambs that are sold
at the Market Drayton auction |
| Today, Brian balances his time between his farming interests and
his active and established career as a county councillor. He was first
enticed into the world of local politics by the intensification of
agricultural techniques and methods. Brian is also interested and
concerned with the high levels of unemployment in the area. |
