Pauline
works as a delivery manager for JobCentre Plus in Market Drayton.
Although she lives in Wellington, she has worked for various other
JobCentres in Shropshire and has a comprehensive understanding of
the demand and supply relationship in the area. Part of her job
is to fill vacancies within the food industry such as Palethorpes
and Mullers in Market Drayton.
One advantage of the new 'make-over' is the multitude of different
ways local clients can enquire about jobs. For example, there is job-points
and touch-screen technology, which links up with the rest of the nation
and in some cases, Europe. It is even easier for people to apply from
home with the introduction of the website that shows vacancies almost
immediately and people can apply direct to the employer. In addition,
clients are offered the use of 'warm phones' which are available
at no extra cost, allowing the client to contact the employer in
relative privacy |
As the only government office in a large rural catchment area the
JobCentre Plus is a focal point and there is a steady stream of
people who make use of the services. Even so, each client is treated
as an individual and much effort is invested in trying to find the
most suitable role for the person in question. Maximum support is
offered and there are regular training sessions, which are designed
to increase client's knowledge and confidence. If the demand for
employees is large scale, JobCentre Plus can sometimes tap into
funding for training a number of people who require a specific skill.

Pauline hopes to draw from the
network the opportunity to promote the JobCentre Plus services and
to identify emerging employment needs. The JobCentre Plus is also
looking for new initiatives. They are currently running a scheme
that is training people specifically for retail employment in Telford
at the Shropshire Retail Academy. This is designed to initially
help employers fill vacancies in Telford but there are plans to
expand the idea to cover Shropshire in the future. This Academy
has successfully established a partnership between JobCentrePlus
and training organisations |
Pauline offers members of the
network the chance to search for both employees and employers in
the food industry nation-wide. The JobCentre Plus office also offers
other facilities. There is a suite which employers can use at no
extra charge for training purposes and interviews. Pauline is more
than happy for people to contact her from both employees and an
employer's perspective. |
