Richard joined the Grove School as Head teacher in September 1997. He moved to North Shropshire from Retford in Nottinghamshire. His grandmother ran a Dairy business in Birmingham.

As head teacher he is responsible for the academic and financial performance of the school. He leads a school of approximately 1100 pupils and a staff group of over 100 members including both teaching and support staff. The school is, in fact, a community within the community drawing young people together from Hodnet, Adderley, and Cheswardine as well as the town. He views his job as providing opportunities for local young people to develop and flourish and establishing the school as the gravitational centre for education within the local community. The greatest challenge, which he shares with other local Head Teachers, lies in controlling the direction and pace of change from National initiatives.

The school occupies the largest and one of the most attractive school sites in Shropshire. The site was part of the grounds of the 18 th Century Grove House, which now serves as an Annexe to the main buildings. The grounds as well as the school host a number of events including the Taste of the Town Exhibition. The school is the County's specialist Language College with links and visits to many countries. These include visits to the Christmas markets in Aachen and Lille. Visits to the site are welcomed but by prior appointment only as security measures are necessary.

Students are taught food technology as a compulsory subject for the first 3 years and it remains a popular option after that. It features at both GSCE and A level in courses such as Health & Social Care and Physical Education. A large number of employers offer work experiences, in food related businesses to older students and there is a strong tradition of students gaining employment locally. The school operates it's own catering service. This enables it to buy locally and negotiate directly with suppliers. Grove Catering has a number of outlets within the school and serves a wide range of food emphasising good nutrition and healthy eating at reasonable prices.

All pupils study Information Technology at Key Skill level and a number take advanced courses. Business Studies students link with local businesses including food processing and manufacturing to understand how IT is used in large companies.

Richard hopes to draw from the network support to realise the potential inherent in the school and its young people. In particular he looks for support in developing NVQ programmes in food related customer services, retail and administration.
He offers to the network the facilities of the buildings and site.
